  10. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Duke was born 
  11. in 1890 and spent most of his boyhood on 
  12. the beaches of Waikiki, where he swam and 
  13. surfed at every opportunity. He became the 
  14. best surfer in Hawaii and introduced the long 
  15. surfboard, which had been popular with his 
  16. Hawaiian ancestors.
