- grew up wearing it proudly. Like a fairy tale
- prince, he excelled in everything he tried,
- especially swimming and surfing.

- A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Duke was born
- in 1890 and spent most of his boyhood on
- the beaches of Waikiki, where he swam and
- surfed at every opportunity. He became the
- best surfer in Hawaii and introduced the long
- surfboard, which had been popular with his
- Hawaiian ancestors.
